Over $8 million was spent on renovating the Playhouse when it was finally reopened in June 2024. Only eighteen months later, in December 2025, it was announced that the Playhouse that the new operator CinemaLabs owed months of back rent and that the town was looking for a new operator. Unlike our peer school districts in Connecticut, New Canaan’s Board of Education self-fund’s the health insurance for its employees, rather than bidding this out to the lowest cost health insurance provider. An analysis of New Canaan’s expenditures versus its peer school districts shows that New Canaan overspent more than $4 million in the 2024-2025 school year with total overspending more than $30 million over the past decade. In July 2025, it was announced by the Board of Education, that they had been investigating the construction of a fourth elementary school, “North School”, as part of the response to a projection of increased student enrollment. In addition, the BOE included plans to renovate the existing three elementary schools and Saxe Middle School with a total projected cost of all these project of up to $300 million. The New Canaan Taxpayer Association will be keeping tabs on this proposal and posting information so New Canaanites can make an informed decision about the biggest spending program in the history of our town.
